Floods: even slight increase in water levels expected

2023-08-29 05:58:00

The water levels along the Inn and the Upper Austrian Danube will continue to rise in the coming hours, the state’s hydrographic service reported around 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning. But no longer dramatic. “The highest levels have been reached almost everywhere. The water levels are stagnating,” says Markus Weber from the Hydrographic Service.

Twelve houses saved

In Schärding, the civil defense alarm was raised yesterday evening. The flood protection in the old town and in the Neustift area has done a good job, reports the operations center there. Twelve houses were saved by protecting them from a flood. The mobile elements and the installed pump systems worked perfectly, and the processes were also well coordinated, one is satisfied there. The fire brigades were on duty all night to take further protective measures, to fetch sandbags from the cross-border sandbag store and, with the help of the fire brigades from the communities of Brunnenthal, St. Florian Neuhaus and Schärding, to refill the stock immediately. The Old Inn Bridge, the Leonhard-Kaiser-Weg, the ship pier car park and numerous cycle and walking paths – including the Innlände – are currently closed to traffic.

In Schärding, the measures were coordinated with the forces of the Red Cross, fire brigade, police, security guard, district authority, building yard and the city administration.

In Braunau, the Salzach has reached the expected maximum. The situation seems to be easing here, even if some roads are currently closed and there are small-scale floods.

Civil defense warning in Perg

Not only the Innviertel is struggling with the water masses. In the district of Perg, the civil protection warning was triggered by the state warning center at around 3 a.m. in Saxen and Reitberg because the water level at the Dornach pumping station rose rapidly, reports the state warning center of the fire brigade. In Mauthausen, the warning limit of the Danube level was reached and exceeded.

The state capital has also prepared for a possible flood. The flood protection was set up and the area at the Urfahraner fairground was closed.

Current highs

The currently forecast maximum levels in Upper Austria are: Schärding level approx. 680 to 720 cm, Achleiten level approx. 610 cm, Linz level approx. 600 cm, Mauthausen level approx. 590 cm and Grein level approx. 1000 cm.

Less rain

Markus Weber assumes that the Precipitation in Upper Austria continue to weaken, local showers are still possible, especially in the southern Innviertel and Salzkammergut.

Fire brigades are working at full speed

For the emergency services of the fire brigades, however, this does not mean the end of the work, quite the opposite. Even if the water levels drop once more, they are required to carry out the clean-up work throughout the state to remove the traces of the storm and flooding.

The flood situation in Austria

The weather situation in Austria calmed down on Tuesday night, but the situation has not yet completely relaxed. Shortly before 6.30 a.m., the Salzburg State Police Headquarters announced that the B159 at Pass Lueg was completely closed, and the rainfall in Pinzgau had increased once more. According to the police, the situation in Tyrol is being closely monitored so that measures can be taken as quickly as possible if the level rises and there is a renewed risk of flooding.

In Vorarlberg, too, the discharge volumes of the Alpine Rhine were still enormous, but were not in the threatening range and were steadily declining. The discharge peak was reached on Monday followingnoon. Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall continued, and the fire brigades were called upon. In the past 24 hours, more than 60 operations have taken place.

According to the hydrographic service of the state of Salzburg, the level of the rivers was only partly at the reporting limit on Tuesday morning, as the state media center informed. There is currently no information regarding injured persons. According to the state’s civil protection, the road connections to the Grossarltal, Gasteinertal and the B311 near Schwarzach have been open once more since 5 a.m.
