The mayor of the town of Haaltert in East Flanders, Veerle Baeyens (N-VA), once morest whom a criminal investigation is underway following the report by Audit Flandre which indicated a possible taking of interest in a subsidy file, has agreed to a redistribution of his powers. This was reported by coalition partner CD&V following the Haaltert city council.

The case concerns a project grant for an event organized as part of the Tour of Flanders on April 3 last year. Haaltert’s opposition has lodged a complaint because a gymnastics association in which Mrs. Baeyens’ husband is involved has improperly claimed subsidies.
The Flanders Audit report showed that there may have been interest-taking and subsidy fraud, and was also forwarded to the Central Anti-Corruption Office (CDBC). The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has also opened an investigation following this report. This is an investigation into an interest taken by a public servant.
