Controversial Incident at Capfun Hirondelle Campsite: German Shepherd Not Allowed

2023-08-28 14:25:45

For the third time in just over a year, Anneke, Stijn, their son Rune and their dog Sky hit the road for the Capfun Hirondelle campsite in Oteppe, in the Ardennes, in the province of Liège. “We were very happy with our last visits and had therefore decided last winter to book at the same place for this month of August”, explained Anneke to the Nieuwslad.

Although their arrival on site went “normally”, the atmosphere became tense the same evening, around 8 p.m., when security showed up at the door of their rental: “We were on a bench, and Sky was at our feet. They asked us if it was a German Shepherd and said that German Shepherds were no longer accepted there”. Surprised, Anneke explained to them that he was welcome during their first two stays and that everything had always gone well. “According to them, there was a new direction, and they had seen on a camera that we were walking around with him”.

Security guards might only see that Sky was a lovable dog and so made a phone call to management. Unfortunately, no one from management was available until Tuesday morning to come on site. The agents then left and the little family thought they were (temporarily) out of the woods.

Return agents

Except that the same evening, the agents returned, more determined than ever. “They were quite aggressive. We had to leave immediately. Rune was already in bed, my man even explained that he had a little drink and was in no condition to drive to Lille. We were told that if we didn’t leave, the police would be called to take Sky to the asylum”.

“Finally, following negotiations, Sky was able to sleep in the car, but we had to move the vehicle out of the park. We are still not well, ”continues Anneke. On Tuesday morning, the family therefore left the premises. They were promised that they would be reimbursed for the remainder of the stay.

On the side of the campsite, we confirm the incident. A spokesperson ensures that, when the customer mentions the presence of a dog when booking, an automatic email is sent to him to find out what breed it is. “But we did not receive this email,” says Anneke.

According to the spokesperson for the campsite, the list of dogs accepted or not is available on the establishment’s website. Which is partially true since we can read that “category 1 and 2” dogs are not allowed. By searching on the other sites of the Capfun group, we find this famous list, but this one does not include German Shepherds. However, it is specified that this list is subject to modifications according to the decisions of the local authorities.
