The “frigoboxgate” started following a video published on the website of the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. In a report that followed the broadcast of the super series Knokke Off on the golden (and depraved) youth of the north, two women complained regarding tourists who walk around in shorts in “their” seaside resort as well as those who go at the beach with a fridgebox, without consuming. The video quickly went viral to the point of becoming the source of inspiration for a facebook event “All in shorts and fridgebox in Knokke”. In total, the number of people interested in this event has risen to more than 47,000 participants!
On Facebook, it was a certain Dirk Willems who rebounded first by creating “a fake gathering of tourists in shorts and with a fridge box in Knokke” this Saturday August 26. But in joke mode, “voor de lol” he wrote. Nevertheless, more than 40,000 people said they were interested and more than 4,000 announced that they would take part.
Suddenly, faced with the announcement of this imposing gathering, the police of the Damme / Knokke-Heist area had decided not to take any risks. Additional agents had been deployed to avoid any problems with large groups of fridgebox tourists. “An additional but discreet and invisible management staff for the public”Police Chief Steve Desmet announced.
The mayor – himself in shorts – spoke on the airwaves of the VRT speaking of a “funny and playful event”: “I don’t expect any problems. That’s the power of social media.”
Finally Saturday at noon, there was almost no fridge box on the horizon and the day passed without keeping its promises of invasion.
Better, the mayor underlined: “The ladies in the video contacted me and also apologized. They have good intentions with our municipality. If there are people who still want to come, I have a message: buy shorts and fridge boxes, you will be welcome in our municipality, it is good for our local economy.
