It was a very special start to the week at FC Bayern. In the pouring rain, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen came to the club headquarters on Säbener Strasse on Monday morning to present the first Israeli player in the 123-year history of the record German soccer champions: goalkeeper Daniel Peretz received a five-year contract. In this respect it is a historic transfer.
“Against the background of our Jewish history, it is of course something special,” said the 55-year-old Dreesen. “For us, however, it doesn’t play a major role on the other side. Origin, gender, religion – we are a cosmopolitan club and want one thing above all: to play football successfully.”
Kurt Landauer, former president of FC Bayern, was Jewish. Under him as club chairman, the club won the German championship for the first time in 1932. He was imprisoned by the Nazis in the Dachau concentration camp for 33 days before fleeing to Switzerland. Landauer returned to Munich in 1947 and was elected FCB president once more that same year. Also because of Landauer, FC Bayern organized a special exhibition on the subject of Jews in German football and at FC Bayern a few years ago. The club posthumously appointed Landauer as honorary chairman of the club.

Because of his mother’s family, Peretz has both Israeli and German citizenship and grew up in a Jewish family. He will wear jersey number 18, saying: “In Israel, 18 is very popular. We celebrate life.” He was received very warmly in Munich, it feels familiar and “like home”. “The coach treats the players like sons.”

Transfer is a big issue in Israel. Several Israeli reporters have been in Munich since the weekend, attended Bayern’s game once morest Augsburg and bought their first Peretz jerseys in the fan shop. And Prime Minister too Benjamin Netanyahu came up with the personnel at a cabinet meeting last week.
The 73-year-old alluded to the sale of the Israeli defense system “Arrow 3” to the Federal Republic and said: “It is possible that we also donate Daniel Peretz for the German defense, we will examine that in the next few days.” The transfer worked. Peretz arrived in Munich with his Israeli girlfriend Noa Kirel, the 22-year-old singer came third in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).
The 23-year-old Peretz played for Maccabi Tel Aviv from 2006 – with a short break due to a loan. He particularly impressed Bayern at the U21 European Championship this summer. In the 1-1 draw once morest Germany, he saved two penalties. About two weeks ago, he had just returned from training when his advisor told him regarding Bayern’s interest. The negotiations dragged on, in the end the clubs agreed on a transfer fee of around five million euros. “I wanted to go to Bayern and I trusted my agent,” said Peretz. “I’ve been a fan since I was a kid.”
“Manu is my role model”
How does he see his role at Bayern? National goalkeeper Manuel Neuer completed a session with his fellow goalkeepers on Monday for the first time since his serious skiing accident last December. So far, Neuer had worked individually on his return following breaking his leg. Neuer wants to play soon, in Sven Ulreich Munich have a reliable replacement. “Of course I want to play,” said Peretz on Monday followingnoon. He shows himself to be self-confident. “I will train as best as I can to show the coach what I can do. I look forward to the challenge. I want to prove myself.”
On Sunday he had already spoken to Neuer, “Manu is my idol, he’s a good guy, very down to earth.” Neuer and Ulreich have a lot of experience at the top level. “I’m an athlete, I want to compete with him, I want to show myself. That’s football, there’s always competition,” said the new goalkeeper.

Dreesen was in a great mood following the 3-1 win once morest FC Augsburg on Sunday evening. The club boss said: “You need passion, discipline and energy to assert yourself at Bayern. Daniel has all of that. With him it was 100 percent clear. He has a lot of potential. As a goalkeeper, you have a long sporting life.”
So far, only a few Israelis have played in the Bundesliga. The first was Schmuel Rosenthal, the midfielder made 13 appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1972/73 season and returned to Israel following just one year. Dreesen hopes that “Daniel will last for a while”, hence the long-term contract. “We can plan a bit of the future with Daniel,” said the club boss.
Ex-professional Cohen praises: “Israeli newcomer”
Almog Cohen, once a “six” at 1. FC Nürnberg and now sports director at the Israeli club Maccabi Netanja, raves regarding Bayern’s arrival. “Daniel is Manuel Neuer 2.0, the Israeli Neuer,” says Cohen.
Peretz himself said Monday regarding his goalkeeping: “I’m very active, have a lot of energy, always want to help and always win. I always want to be close to the defenders, always get involved. But I don’t want to talk too much regarding my game.” And to the journalists: “I hope you’ll see it.”

His coach Thomas Tuchel turns 50 this Tuesday – and still has wishes until the transfer period ends on Friday. In the game once morest Augsburg last Sunday, Tuchel confirmed that he wants a “holding six”, a defensively thinking midfielder for headquarters.
The coach said at DAZN: “We currently only have three midfielders. It’s definitely risky if something happens, if someone is suspended or injured. “Honorary President Uli Hoeneß said in an interview with WELT AM SONNTAG: “We think the squad is top-class.” Should Bayern still bring in a midfielder, it might be Manchester United’s Scott McTominay. The 26-year-old Scot fits the profile and Munich might loan him out for a year.
Pavard wants to change by Friday
Benjamin Pavard might still leave the club. The French national defender definitely wants to leave, called in sick from time to time last week and was missing from the squad once morest Augsburg. According to the club, he has back and stomach problems, the situation should affect him. Inter Milan is interested and should be ready to pay around 28 million euros plus bonuses for Pavard a year before his contract with Bayern ends.
But Munich only wants to let Pavard go if they have a replacement. According to media reports, Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea should be a candidate. Tuchel is considered a big supporter of the 24-year-old Englishman. Both know each other from their time together at Chelsea.
Pavard trained once more on Monday morning. Dreesen said of the case: “We still have a few days. I’m quite confident that we’ll be able to finalize the matter in this transfer window.”
