Record-Breaking Van Peteghem State Bond: How Belgians Raised Over 8.8 billion Euros

2023-08-28 10:33:51

Monday noon, on the fifth day (weekend included) of the subscription period, the Van Peteghem State bond continues to drive the counters crazy.

A total amount of more than 8.8 billion has, in fact, been raised from the Belgians. The record for Leterme vouchers, which raised 5.7 billion euros in three days in December 2011, has therefore been largely beaten.

Via the investment establishments (thirteen banks and a brokerage firm), 4.173 billion euros were raised. Nearly 128,000 citizens have chosen to subscribe directly to this title (via the Debt Agency). The latter have invested nearly 4.630 billion euros (a figure stopped Monday noon).

As a reminder, this one-year debt security (an exceptionally short maturity, the maturity of a State bond usually being at least three years) benefits from a withholding tax reduced by half to 15% and offers a net return of 2.81%. Launched on the initiative of the Minister of Finance Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V), its purpose is twofold: to console savers frustrated by the low return on their savings account and to stimulate competition between banks in this segment.
