Darja Varfolomeev (16) from Fellbach (near Stuttgart) really cleaned up at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Valencia. In four days she wins five gold medals, plus silver in the team ranking.

The student to BILD: “I can’t realize it yet. It’s incredible. I’m so proud that I made it, that the hard work was worth it.”
Darja’s four gold days:
► On the first day of competition on Wednesday, she wins with the hoop, then with the ball.
► On Thursday she follows up, wins with the clubs and the ribbon.
► Then on Saturday the final in the all-around. Carmen Rischer (today 67) won the last German World Cup gold in this discipline – in 1975! 48 years later, Germany has a gymnastics queen once more: Darja gets 137,450 points with ball, ribbon, clubs and hoop, leaves the competition behind and grabs sensational gold number 5!
Who is Darya?
She was born in Barnaul, Siberia. She started doing gymnastics when she was three years old. When she was eleven, she realized that she was “quite good,” she says.
The competition in Russia, however, is huge. “I didn’t see the greatest chances of getting into the national team. Since my grandfather is German and my mother also has German citizenship, I moved to Germany for the sport.” At the age of twelve she moved to her grandparents, her parents will follow later.
A bold step that should pay off. Last year Darja won World Championship gold with clubs. Now she follows up – and how!
Preparing for the World Cup is tough. “For the last few weeks I’ve been training twice a day – five hours in the morning, four hours in the followingnoon.”
Her last appearance in the all-around final: the freestyle with the ball. She was a little nervous for the first time during the World Cup

So now it’s time to relax: “I’m going on vacation with my family for two weeks in Mallorca.”
Then Darja concentrates on the next big goal: the Olympic Games.
It cannot be ruled out that the athletes from Russia will be allowed to start under a neutral flag in Paris following a ban due to the Russian war of aggression once morest Ukraine.
Does Darja fear the competitors from her native country?
“I can’t tell how good they are. I can’t see how they train here. But I look forward to every competition.”
One thing is clear: If you want gold at the Olympics, you have to beat Darja.
