Large-Scale Police Operation at Brussels-Midi: Addressing Illegality, Homelessness, and Public Order

On Saturday, at the instigation of the southern police zone of Brussels and the interior cabinet, a large-scale police action was organized inside and around the Brussels-Midi station. Around 60 people were arrested during this operation, the cabinet of the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Verlinden, told Belga. “A total of 56 arrests were made, including 47 for people residing illegally, five people reported to the police and the rest for disturbing public order and drunkenness,” said the Verlinden cabinet. Persons residing illegally who have been arrested have been handed over to the immigration service. “Some homeless people were also taken to hospital for medical treatment,” the firm said.

If the Verlinden administration considers “that a clear signal has been given to travelers and local residents that their concerns have been heard” and that, according to it, there is no doubt that “actions like the one on Saturday will certainly be repeated in the future and have their merits”, she points out that the large-scale police intervention in the country’s busiest train station is not the lasting solution necessary to the “real problems of illegality, homelessness, drug addiction , sanitation and dilapidated and dilapidated infrastructure”.
