Unveiling the Transformation: The Evolution of the Savage into a Devil at Ducasse d’Ath

As recommended by the Folklore Commission, the Savage was to turn into a “devil” during the Ducasse d’Ath. And he should have started transforming this year. Indeed, an agreement had been reached within the folklore commission which is responsible for examining the future of the Savage.

“An agreement has been reached on the fact that the Savage would have a two-tone appearance with black and red”, indicated Laurent Dubuisson, the director of the Maison des Géants in our edition of Friday August 18. “It will be up to the commission to decide on the final appearance of the character: the process is underway and it should be completed in 2024,” he added. But an “evolution” (from savage to devil) was to be initiated this year.

“We proposed to the group of the Barque to consider an evolution by leaving them the control of this one which will not be definitive”, confided to us Laurent Dubuisson once more on the eve of the Ducasse.

However, nothing really went as planned. Arrived on the forecourt of the Saint-Julien church, the sailors of the Barque curled up on the Sauvage, before lighting red smoke bombs. A color that one would have expected on the face of the Savage, thus becoming Devil.

The latter, who had appeared without his nose ring at the start of the procession, got up, wearing his ring once more, and a light red veil under his eyes. The message seems clear: the Savage does not intend to evolve; at least not as quickly as expected.

The folklore commission should position itself in the coming weeks in relation to the physiognomy of the Savage when a consensus had been found on the “diabolical” evolution. Will this Sunday’s episode have consequences?
