The Last Battle: Verlander vs. Cabrera – A Clash of Living Baseball Legends

DETROIT – During the victoria 17-4 of the Astros over the Tigers Sunday followingnoon at Comerica Park, two living legends – MVP winners, longtime teammates, most likely future Hall of Famers and perhaps the greatest hitter and pitcher of their generation – – They faced each other for the last time.

In what was almost certainly the last duel between Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera, Verlander battled through five scoreless innings while Cabrera was able to get hits once morest the star right-hander.

In the second, Verlander struck out Cabrera standing up with a curveball. In the third, Cabrera hit four foul pitches before grounding out. In the fifth, with two out and Cabrera warned, Verlander got the out he needed, ending his outing with Cabrera in the on-deck circle.

In the eighth, long following Verlander had departed, Cabrera hit a three-run homer, his 510th career home run, to break a tie with Gary Sheffield and stand alone for 26th all-time. Mel Ott ranks 25th with 511 homers, while Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews are tied for 23rd with 512.

It was a rare duel. Teammates with the Tigers from 2008-17, Verlander brought his 253 wins, three Cy Young Awards, pitching Triple Crown and MVP award to the mound with 509 home runs, 3,150 hits, two MVPs, the offensive Triple Crown and the Cabrera’s .307 lifetime batting average. The pair have a combined age of 80 years and 319 days, and a combined bWAR of 147.5. Together they have played 39 seasons and have participated in 21 All-Star Games.

While the two legends faced each other, the Astros took the series thanks to home runs by Kyle Tucker, Honduran Mauricio Dubón, Puerto Rican Martín Maldonado and Cuban Yainer Diaz.
