The next federal, regional and European elections will take place in June 2024. A few months later, in October, it will be the turn of the municipalities. From here, we offer you a new appointment every Sunday: it’s our “campaign diary”. This Sunday, it is devoted to the political return.
First campaign diary, and today is a back-to-school special. For school, it’s tomorrow. For politicians, it has already begun. Party presidents have already exchanged pleasantries.
Jean-Marc Nollet, co-president of Ecolo, sends a message to Georges-Louis Bouchez during an interview: “Let him stop dealing exclusively with millionaires. Those who have money on the stock market, in accounts, etc. and who then might have to contribute more“. Response from Georges-Louis Bouchez, President of the Reform Movement: “He only talks regarding taxes. Its only solution is to tax. But when you’re in the most taxed country in the world, shouldn’t taxes be lowered instead?“.
And to think that they are together on the bench of the federal government…
De Wever attacks the “wokists”, Stop the proletarian cheek
Let’s continue with this political return, which is also this literary year. Bart De Wever, the president of the Flemish nationalists of the N-VA, has published a book. It can be read that “wokism is part of a postmodern self-destruction framework […] kind of left-wing ready-to-think that destroys everything that forges our identity“. Flemish identity, obviously.
For the occasion, let’s recall the definition of the term “woke” and “wokism”. It is an Anglo-American term meaning “awakened”. It initially refers to being aware of issues of social justice and racial equality. The term is also used to denigrate progressive ideas, often centered on defending the rights of minority groups.
There is also the work of Georges-Louis Bouchez. The president of the MR defines himself there as a proletarian, on page 84. And he justifies himself by hitting the socialists. “I have no risk of going to the left, because the left has abandoned a value which is essential and which I claim at length in the book, it is the notion of work. […] I saw what they did in the region (note: Mons region) and therefore I know all the more what not to do. I know them too well to be able to appreciate them“, he comments during an interview.
Some promises and ideas
Given the election year, in our campaign notebook, let’s leave room for the promises of the week.
Frédéric Daerden (PS), Budget Minister of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation: “Maybe have transfers between the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the regions. Perhaps in particular at the level of childcare“. Jean-Marc Nollet, co-president of Ecolo: “I say selective degrowth. Consume differently, change your heating mode, go electric, etc.“.
We will keep the big pledge board updated in the coming weeks.
Communication on social networks
Finally, make way for the 2.0 campaign notebook with social networks. Today, everyone publishes back-to-school events.
For the PS, Paul Magnette invites his troops to Mons next Sunday. For the MR, the Reform Movement will also go to Hainaut, to the Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure the following week.
For the PTB, direction Ostend. The Labor Party of Belgium mainly communicates on a bus. This is called “the great investigation“, or how to collect ideas for free and easily for a future program.
And then there is the improbable, when politics plays with current events. Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo), Minister of Mobility, who thinks he is Donald Trump and has his portrait taken… This time, it’s not to pay his bail and avoid prison, but to renew his transport subscription in common, of course!
Everyone will make their own opinion. More than 287 sleeps before the elections.
