Two Czechs returned completely exhausted and soaked from a tour of the Donnerkogel in Gosau on Saturday. They had made a mistake when descending from the Zwieselalm. When darkness and heavy rain set in, the father dialed the emergency call at around 8:40 p.m. At an altitude of 1,100 meters, he and his daughter waited for help. Gosau mountain rescuers and Gmunden alpine police climbed up to the duo and were able to bring it down unharmed, the police reported on Sunday.
Started too late
Poor time management was one reason why the tour ended in a rescue operation. According to the police report, the Czechs only started at noon. After they had reached the Zwieselalm with the cable car, the two climbed into the Donnerkogel via ferrata. After five hours they reached the summit – much too late. That’s why they missed the cable car that was supposed to take them back down to the valley. This had already ceased operations.
Father and daughter therefore decided to descend via the “Feichteck” to the Vorderer Gosausee. They got into an unmarked and very little used path along the former ski slope. “Due to the weak climbing tracks and the lack of local knowledge, the two Czechs climbed the steep, rocky terrain and might neither go forward nor back,” said the police. With the help of mountain rescue and alpine police, they finally reached the valley.
