LONDON (AP) — London’s Metropolitan Police is stepping up its security measures following a company that keeps data on its officers was hacked.
The institution reported on Saturday night that there was an “unauthorized access to the information and technology system” of one of its suppliers. He added that the company, which he did not identify, has access to names, ranks, photos, security levels and payroll codes, but not personal information such as phone numbers, addresses or financial data.
The police agency said it is “working with the company to understand whether there has been a breach related to Metropolitan Police data” and has referred the matter to the National Crime Agency.
The Metropolitan Police Federation, a police association, said the infiltration caused “enormous shock and anger.”
“This is a flagrant intrusion that should never have happened,” said federation vice president Rick Prior. “Given the missions we assign our colleagues, we needed to have security safeguards and procedures in place to protect this valuable personal information that, in the wrong hands, might cause untold harm.”
The hack comes following the Northern Ireland Police Service acknowledged last month that it inadvertently released the personal information of more than 10,000 officers and employees in response to a freedom of information request.
Authorities fear the information has found its way into the hands of Irish Republican Army dissidents who still occasionally attack police officers, 25 years following the Northern Ireland peace deal.
