On the occasion of the visit to the Senate of Mr. Hendrik Wüst and his delegation, President Gérard Larcher made a point of emphasizing, at the opening of the session on Wednesday, October 5, “the importance of the close, long-standing cooperation between the Senate and the Bundesrat in the service of Franco-German relations”.

“We will have the opportunity to solemnly reaffirm this friendship in 2023, by celebrating the 60e anniversary of the Elysée Treaty” he added. The President of the Senate insisted on the “renewed place” that the cultural dimension should occupy. He stressed the need, particularly in the face of the current energy crisis, for a “common and united response, in order to preserve the unity of the euro zone and the strength of our economies”.

The meeting of the interparliamentary friendship group, chaired by Mr. Ronan Le Gleut (Les Républicains – French established outside France), with Mr. Hendrik Wüst focused mainly on the impact of the current energy crisis on industrial activity , particularly in terms of production and employment. It also made it possible to underline the need to strengthen, through new initiatives, the Franco-German programs for linguistic and cultural exchanges. Learning and practicing the partner’s language, as well as strengthening ties between young French and young Germans, must remain a priority.
