This viral disease is transmitted by the bite of a carrier mosquito. It is therefore favored by the rains which leave stagnant water. The disease is quite rare in Senegal but the health authorities want to be reassuring: no serious case has been recorded for the moment.

Joined by RFI, Dr. Mamadou Ndiaye, director of prevention at the Ministry of Health, explains how to spot chikungunya and how to avoid it.

« “Wherever in the national territory, health workers have been trained to recognize certain signs that are reminiscent of these pathologies: as soon as a patient has a sudden high fever, body aches… these are signs which are not very specific – in malaria too, you can also find body aches – so these are non-specific signs. What predominates here is that it hurts in the joints and sometimes the joints are swollen. So, it can make think of a chikungunya and other pathologies. They are then obliged to take samples to transmit to the laboratory and it is once this is confirmed that we can say that it is this pathology or not. »

« Rarely fatal »

“It is rarely fatal. In general, fatal cases occur in very young or elderly subjects, or in subjects with other pathologies. But in general, if the treatment is well conducted, in two weeks the individual regains his health. Individually, it is necessary to protect themselves once morest bites by wearing covering clothes, putting mosquito nets on windows and doors. Above all, we advise each individual to sleep under a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide”.
