Three U.S. Marines killed in plane crash during military exercise in Australia
Washington: Three US Marines died in a plane crash during a military exercise in northern Australia. 20 people were injured. The Bell Boeing V22 Osprey tiltrotor plane crashed at 9.30 local time. There were 23 people on the plane. Five of the injured are said to be in serious condition. They have been transferred to a hospital in Darwin. The Australian Ministry of Defense said the accident occurred during a military exercise involving Australia, the US, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor.
Aljazeera reported that the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the accident was a very tragic incident and that all necessary assistance would be provided to the injured.
The US and Australia, key allies in the Pacific, have increased their military cooperation in recent years. Last month, four Australian soldiers died when a helicopter crashed in the sea off the coast of Queensland. The aircraft involved 13 countries including the US, Australia, Japan, France, Germany and more than 30,000 personnel in Talisman Saber, a joint military exercise.
In June of last year, five sailors were killed when an Osprey plane crashed in the desert near the Arizona border. Last March, four sailors were killed when an Osprey plane crashed near a Norwegian city during NATO military exercises.
