Who has never dreamed of allowing themselves to eat “junk food”, without harmful effects, without gaining weight, and while remaining healthy? American researchers have just developed a treatment that seems to be able to make this a reality!

Researchers from the University of Texas Health Science (Science (Latin scientia, “knowledge”) is, according to the dictionary…) Center (San Antonio), have indeed recently published the results of their research: they succeeded in developing a drug (A drug is a substance or composition presented as possessing…) named “CPACC”, allowing to prevent weight gain (Weight gain is a change in body mass, which results in an increase…) and the associated adverse hepatic effects. To do this, they analyzed the effect of magnesium on the mouse organism. Magnesium is already known to play multiple roles in the body, including arterial (Tension is a force of extension.) blood pressure, blood sugar regulation (The blood sugar regulation involves the hormonal system, as well as several…) or the solidification (Solidification is the operation during which a liquid passes into a state…) of the bones. However, scientists have noticed that it might also have a direct effect on the production of energy burn the calories.

Everything is played out in the mitochondria: these organelles are known to produce and transport ATP (a key molecule in the production of energy) to places where energy demand is greatest. Their role is thus to produce energy, which is essential in the combustion of calories. As part of their study, the scientists found that excess magnesium in these mitochondria had the effect of slowing down the production of ATP in them.

In order to put an end to this effect, they then tried to delete a specific gene (the MRS2) which promotes the transport of magnesium in the mitochondria. And the attempt was a success: the deletion of this gene did lead to a limitation of the quantity (Quantity is a generic term of metrology (count, amount); a scalar,…) of transferred magnesium, thus generating a better metabolization of sugar and fats!

They then developed a drug capable of performing precisely this action, and administered it to mice on which they had previously imposed a diet high in fat, sugar and calories. Rapidly, the rodents lost weight despite their diet, without showing any sign of diabetes (Diabetes has several forms, which all have abundant urine in common…), obesity (Obesity is the condition of a person, or an animal, suffering from an enlargement of…) or liver disease.

This result follows several years of research. The drug “CPACC” can significantly reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes, but also cardiovascular disease or liver cancer that can occur as a result of poor diet. The next steps will probably consist in expanding the research, in order to measure the effects of the deletion of the MRS2 gene on other organs than the liver, in particular the heart, the brain, the kidneys or the lungs for example. It also remains to be seen whether the results observed in mice can be applied to humans.
