A little empathy…for the present and near future

2023-08-27 04:06:00

Two people are talking at the door of a school

Lady: What an outrage dear, how we are living… This climate change thing is terrible.

Young: Yes it’s true.

Lady: look at everything that happens in the world. These things were not seen before. Where do we get…

Young: Yeah. I don’t know. The world disappoints me like this. I don’t know what will become of my future and that of the new generations.

Lady: Yes, very sad. And these governments that always look the other way.

Young: They don’t care regarding anything. Just fill your pockets.

(A boy runs up and hugs the lady)

Niño: Hi Abu! At school today they taught me how to eco-package. The lady says that if we separate the waste at home, we can end up making almost no garbage…

Lady: (almost without hearing it) How nice, I’m glad…

Niño: Did you hear Abu, we don’t have to throw out the garbage, just like we do. Imagine if we all did it… We would hardly make garbage…

Lady: of course, of course.

Young: how is that?

Niño: The lady showed us a video of many garbage dumps. Did you know that my baby diapers can be in there? And the Abu bag that you threw away when you were a girl, too.

He told us that there is the garbage of our grandparents and great-grandparents who lived around here. That it is contaminating the earth, the air we breathe, all of Abu. Let’s do something. I don’t want to get sick.

Lady: No dear, you are far from the dump.

Niño: it’s that the garbage will cover us Abu, and everything reaches the water, I won’t have to drink when I grow up.

Lady: (addressing the young woman) oh these boys, they come with everything from school… Look if we are going to have to separate the garbage, how ridiculous, if everything goes to the same place followingwards. Let the politicians take care of it, that’s what we pay them for…

Niño: but the politicians are going to separate the garbage? The lady says that if it is dirty it is no longer useful for recovery. That, if we separate it into paper and cardboard, aluminum, glass, plastics, eco-packaging, everything later has another use. I don’t want to kill trees Abu…I want to be big and have forests and sea where I can bathe. Clean rivers, like the ones you tell me regarding when you were a girl… I also want to enjoy…

For something of all this, the first environmental education congress arose. Because those of us who step on it today do not own the world, only visitors, by the way. The arrogance that led us to today’s climate crisis must be modified. It’s not regarding whether it sucks or not. The lives of future generations are at stake, including ours. Those of us who today can decide whether to continue criticizing or change the habit. Although it may seem insignificant… how contagious is a good deed?

Everything has a second chance, if we let it happen. We are consumers. What do we consume? Because? So that? What do we do with what we no longer want? Who else takes over?

Awareness and leadership are the axes of this meeting. Habit changes, even if they give fiaca, even if you distrust. If each one and all of us don’t do it, that child in the story and all the children in the world will have a future tied to disaster. You know I’m not exaggerating. Stop looking the other way.
