Strength test: was Windows 11 able to replace WinRAR and NanaZIP? Windows 11 File Explorer challenges third-party apps. Microsoft is set to release a major update to Windows 11 this year. Many improvements are expected in version 23H2, including a new File Explorer design. Particularly noteworthy is the support for popular archive formats: RAR, TAR, 7Z. Prior to the release of 23H2, ZIP was the only natively supported format on Windows. Users were forced to use third-party applications to work with RAR, 7Z and others. Despite the many free and paid programs for compressing files, the built-in support for such formats will greatly facilitate the process of working with downloaded archives. All this leads to the question: will the updated explorer be able to replace applications such as WinRAR, 7Zip and NanaZIP for users who often work with archives? To answer this question, a test was conducted that compared the speed of unzipping files using Explorer, WinRAR and NanaZIP. During the experiment, it was found: All three applications successfully extracted archives in the TAR format in regarding 80 seconds. With the RAR format, File Explorer ran into problems, completing the process in almost 6 minutes. This is three times slower than WinRAR and two times slower than NanaZIP. When extracting 7Z archives, Explorer took almost 9 minutes, while WinRAR and NanaZIP did it in one minute. Testing has also shown that File Explorer is significantly less user-friendly: there is no proper progress indication, it cannot open password-protected archives, and ZIP remains the only supported format for creating new archives. However, despite the shortcomings, this update will improve the Windows 11 experience for most users. Until WinRAR and other third-party programs are left idle.
