The number of thematic funds has quadrupled worldwide over the past ten years. There are thus 2,131 of these vehicles which invest in themes such as technology, energy transition or the exit from the pandemic, out of a total of around 89,000 funds available on the planet, according to global figures from Morningstar. Such a figure does not exist for Switzerland, according to the Asset Management Association, but the financial center is not immune to the craze for these instruments in tune with the times, easy to understand but also open to exaggerations. and buzz.
The rise of thematic funds is closely linked to the standardization of economies. Until the 1980s, different countries in the same area might experience very different stages of development. Sectors of activity retained a national dimension – Italian oil stocks, for example, did not have the same characteristics as their English or French competitors.
