Citizens started gathering in groups of threes and threes here at Gwanghwamun from 3:00 pm, an hour ago.

Members ranged from attendees at the level of environmental civic groups, ordinary citizens who came as individuals, and political figures.

Each of them is holding a slogan, ‘No to ocean dumping of contaminated water from Fukushima’.

Today’s rally was hosted by the ‘Joint Action to Stop Marine Dumping of Radioactive Water in Japan’, a gathering of civic groups and labor circles.

Here, the representatives of the four opposition parties, the Democratic Party, the Justice Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Progressive Party, are participating.

In addition, people from all walks of life, including fishermen, academia, and university students, will attend the rally and speak.

Organizers estimate that 10,000 people attended.

At today’s rally, they will strongly criticize the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power for starting to discharge contaminated water treated at the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea on the 24th.

Organizers plan to hold the rally for regarding an hour and a half.

Then, from around 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, he explained that he planned to march from City Hall Square to the road in front of the Yongsan Presidential Office.

The joint action party that hosted this rally is leading and making its voice heard.

They have been holding rallies and press conferences since the 24th, right following the Japanese government started discharging contaminated water.

In particular, they continued to hold candlelight vigils in front of the Japanese Embassy in Gwanghwamun and the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul every evening, condemning the Japanese government and criticizing the Korean government for allowing speculation in practice.

In this process, the behavior of college students was also followed.

On the 24th, 16 college students, including the ‘College Student Expedition Against Dumping Contaminated Water in Fukushima’, attempted to enter the Japanese embassy and were arrested on the spot on charges of trespassing.

The police released them all on the morning of the 26th, saying there was no reason to arrest them.

However, it is the position that the organizers of the assembly will decide whether to send them to the prosecution following examining the alleged violation of the Assembly and Demonstration Act.
