It was the second top ten result in Hungary following Lukas Weißhaidinger (discus) finished seventh.
Victoria Hudson took fifth place in the javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a throw of 62.92 m. It was the best result for the Lower Austrian at a major global event. Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi (66.73 m) won gold ahead of Colombia’s Flor Denis Ruíz Hurtado (65.47) and Australia’s Mackenzie Little (63.38). For the ÖLV it was the second top ten result in Hungary following seventh place with Lukas Weißhaidinger (discus).
“I’m just overwhelmed, the atmosphere was amazing. It was definitely the best competition of my life, but I can’t quite decide whether I can be super happy with fifth place. 46 centimeters are very little that were missing,” said Hudson. She mightn’t remember the throws that much, she just tried to implement what her coach Gregor Högler said. “On the last throw I put such tremendous pressure on the javelin, if I had only hit it halfway it would have gone very far, unfortunately I twisted it to the left.”
Third place in the super final
Hudson went into the final with a goal of six throws. To do this, he had to be in the top eight following three attempts. The bronze medalist at the European Games in Poland started with start number one and 59.08 m. She landed the second throw at 62.14 m, improving her to second place. She trailed 59.20, passed only by Kitaguchi, and advanced to the Superfinal third.

Of course, the athletes take more risks there. So did 27-year-old Hudson, who improved to 62.92 on her fourth attempt. This was followed by 59.56 m and 59.84, with which no further improvement in rank was possible, but an impressive series overall. The result promises great things for the future, as Hudson has only been working with Högler once more since January. He would have liked more preparation time together and meant before the World Cup. “The right shot will definitely come at the Olympics, that’s a small prelim.” A distance of 64 m is required to take part in the Summer Games, and the qualifying period began on July 1st.
“Great series from Vicky”
Högler spoke of a “great series from Vicky”. Throwing like this when there is absolutely no wind is strong. “She did a great job and it shows her that she’s absolutely up there. That also makes me very optimistic for Paris next year.” On Wednesday, Hudson qualified fourth with a jump of 62.96 m and made it into the final of the top twelve. The best in the elimination, the Latvian Līna Mūze Sirmā, had to settle for ninth place in the final. (APA)
