The German authorities fear that the installation of a new large floating terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be delayed. Due to opposition from local authorities, the terminal may not be operational this winter.
Economy Minister Robert Habeck says the delay might pose problems for the availability of natural gas for Germany.
The new LNG terminal will be located in a port on the island of Rügen, which is part of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Hebeck is urging the state government to speed up the commissioning. But Mecklenburg-Vorpommern does not just issue a permit. She first wants to see what the consequences are for the environment.
“The supply of gas must be planned in such a way that delivery is secure even in the event of exceptionally cold weather or pipeline problems,” the minister writes. “Otherwise there is a risk of incalculable price increases, supply problems and serious economic damage, which will mainly affect East Germany.”
Germany suffered a lot last year from the cut off of gas supplies by Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Germany then acquired three LNG terminals. The terminals can make liquefied gas suitable for gas pipelines.
Not only the administration of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern seems to be protesting. One of the nearby municipalities has also asked the court to stop construction on a pipeline to the terminal.
