DETROIT — Rookie Parker Meadows hit his first career home run with two out in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Houston Astros 4-1 on Friday.
The Astros led 1-0 to start the ninth, and closer Ryan Pressly struck out his first two opponents.
Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera, Zach McKinstry and Puerto Rican Javier Báez followed with singles. Pinch-hitter Carson Kelly scored from second on Baez’s liner to center field.
Meadows, who was playing his fourth career game, then hit his home run to full right field.
Alex Lange (6-3) pitched the ninth for the win. It was the fifth blown save for Pressly (3-4) in 33 chances.
Houston wasted a spectacular start by Framber Valdez, who struck out six and walked five over seven hitless innings. The left-hander, who threw a no-hitter once morest Cleveland on Aug. 1, matched his career high with 114 pitches.
