Former Ssangyong Group Chairman Kim Seok-won, who once placed Ssangyong Group in 6th place in the business world, passed away today (26th) at the age of 78.

In 1975, Kim Seong-gon, the founder of Ssangyong Group, passed away while studying in the United States.

Ssangyong Group, which started as a soap factory, was focusing on Ssangyong Cement, a cement manufacturer, as its main business at the time.

After inheriting the group, former Chairman Kim aggressively expanded his business areas to heavy chemical, construction, and financial industries, and rose to the 6th place in the business world.

Former Chairman Kim, who was always interested in automobiles, took over Donga Motors in 1986 and entered the automobile business, establishing Ssangyong Motors (currently KG Mobility).

In 1996, he was elected in the 15th National Assembly election and entered politics, but when the group fell into a management crisis due to unreasonable expansion of the automobile business, he resigned from the National Assembly in 1998 and returned to management.

Afterwards, they tried to overcome the crisis by selling Ssangyong Motor, but the entire group suffered difficulties as the acquirer did not appear due to the foreign exchange crisis, and eventually disbanded.

Former Chairman Kim was also arrested and indicted in 2005 for stealing billions of won of company property through accounting fraud around the end of the 1997 financial crisis.

In 1974, Chairman Kim built the Yongpyong ski resort and developed it into a resort, laying the foundation for the development of winter sports and leisure industries.

In 1988, he served as the head of the World Youth Camp held right following the Seoul Olympics, contributing to international youth exchange, and from 2000 he served as the chairman of the World Scout Support Foundation for two years.
