Huawei and Ericsson sign long-term patent cross-licensing agreement

Shenzhen, China (ots/PRNewswire) Huawei and Ericsson have signed a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement. It covers patents essential to a variety of standards such as 3GPP, ITU, IEEE and IETF for 3G, 4G and 5G cellular technologies. The agreement covers the distribution of network infrastructure and consumer devices from both companies and grants both parties worldwide access to the patented, standardized technologies of the other party.

“We are very pleased to have entered into a long-term global cross-licensing agreement with Ericsson,” said Alan Fan, head of Intellectual Property at Huawei mutually value each other’s intellectual property, and this agreement creates a stronger patent environment. It demonstrates that both parties are committed to proper respect and protection of intellectual property.”

Over the past 20 years, Huawei has made important contributions to core ICT standards, including standards for cellular, Wi-Fi, and multimedia codecs. In 2022, Huawei topped the European Patent Office’s ranking of patent applicants with 4,505 filings.

Huawei both owns and implements SEPs and strives for a balanced approach to licensing. By entering into this agreement, the companies will gain access to key technologies. Fan said, “This agreement is the result of intensive discussions to ensure that the interests of patent holders and implementers alike are protected.”
