it could cause brain inflammation

Gluten is (almost) everywhere in our diet. Bread, pasta, biscuits are all foods that we eat daily and which contain gluten.

For some time now, gluten has been at the heart of the debate: should it be removed from your diet? According to Isabelle Huot, doctor in nutrition, there would be no point in removing it from its dietexcept if you suffer from celiac disease or if you are prone to allergies.

However, and this is a study that has just demonstrated, gluten causes inflammation in the brain (in mice) which, ultimately, might lead to increased body weight and impaired blood sugar regulation.

Gluten: its impact on the brain is proven in mice

The study led by Associate Professor Alex Tups, and recently published in the Journal of Neuroendocrinology, was carried out on a population of mice which have many similarities with the human body at the level of the circulatory, reproductive, digestive, hormonal and nervous systems.

The objective was to determine whether a standard diet, called a low-fat diet (LFD), enriched with 4.5% gluten (corresponding to the average human daily consumption), or a high-fat diet (HFD), enriched of 4.5% gluten, modifies the body. “While previous studies have shown that gluten promotes body mass gain and inflammation in mice in the enteric nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract, we studied the impact of gluten on the brain” specifies the press release issued following the results.

Results to be confirmed in humans

Gluten-induced hypothalamic inflammation was noted by the researchers: It might be that the components of wheat and gluten resistant to digestion might lead to an immune response, as in celiac patients, which would then manifest in the brain. We are in the early days and need future studies to confirm whether this has implications for celiac or gluten-sensitive patients,” the researchers reported.

The latter have at the same time declared that they do not want to encourage people to remove gluten from their diet because this can have health consequences. ” The fact that gluten-tolerant people do not consume gluten at all can have health consequences which may outweigh the potential benefits. »
