Check signed by Steve Jobs and Woz sells for over $135,000

We showed here, almost a month ago, that a check signed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozkniakco-founders of Apple, was being auctioned. The document is dated March 19, 1976even before the company was opened, and contains its first address, in the famous garage in Palo Alto – in addition to being the second check issued by what would become the company.

Yesterday, the check was sold for exactly US$135.261a value well above the US$50,000 that the auction house RR Auction estimated that the sale of the relic would, at the very least, raise. It is worth remembering that, originally, the check had the value of only US$116,97 (which today would be worth regarding US$630), regarding 214x less than the amount paid by the lucky person who took the relic home.

The amount is similar to that paid for another check also signed by Jobs and Woz, auctioned last year for US$131,100. Checks signed by both Steves are especially rare; according to RR Auction, expenses over $100 needed approval from two of the partners, which is possibly why the check was signed by the two co-founders.

Most interestingly, writing out the amount for the check amount leaves out $16, with just “one hundred dollars” and the 97 cents, so it is possible that the amount was never deposited. Issued by the Wells Fargo bank, the credit document was intended for Ramlor, Inc., a manufacturer of printed circuit boards, probably for the acquisition of components for the Apple I.

As it dates back to before the foundation of Maçã itself, it is possible that this document is a type of check used before the issuance of definitive checks, printed with all the data following the company’s registration and other procedures. The relic, therefore, is from a time when it was not even known what the future of Apple would be, nor that it would be as successful as we know today.
