Daniel Ricciardo was taken to a local hospital for hand checks following his accident during Free Practice 2 of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The AlphaTauri driver went straight into the wall at banked Turn 3, appearing to be distracted by Oscar Piastri’s crash at the same corner just ahead of him that left the McLaren partly in the line. Ricciardo told team radio that he injured his hand and immediately removed his left glove before cautiously stepping out.

Ricciardo also reported to a steward that he had a problem with his left hand as he sat on the side of his car, shaking his head in frustration before being taken to the medical centre.

The Australian was later pictured leaving the medical center with his arm in a sling, and the FIA confirmed he had been taken to a local hospital for checks.

Asked regarding Ricciardo’s situation and the possibility of a replacement, Marko said: “We don’t know exactly what it is yet, but he was in a lot of pain. His wrist was injured, but we have to wait for a diagnosis, he’s at the hospital.”

“It’s a new situation for us. First we are waiting to see how Ricciardo is doing and if he can drive or not. Then we will discuss [de qui monte dans la voiture].”

If Ricciardo isn’t fit to race, Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson is on hand at Zandvoort and will need to at least qualify in order to start the Grand Prix on Sunday.

AlphaTauri can also still call on Nyck de Vries if needed, having replaced the Dutchman with Ricciardo ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. De Vries would indeed still be under contract with Red Bull.
