Messenger Lite is being shut down by Meta. In case you don’t know, it is the lightest and most basic version of the Messenger application, which is also developed by Meta, a company formerly called Facebook. According to Aisha Malik, from the TechCrunch website, Messenger Lite has already been removed from the Play Store, the Android application store. In addition, from September 18th, there will be no more updates to the app.

A spokesperson told TechCrunch that “as of August 21, people using the Messenger Lite Android app will be redirected to Messenger or Facebook Lite.” Mobile analytics company “data.ai” says that Lite versions of Messenger have had approximately 760 million downloads worldwide, with India being the country where people have downloaded the app the most. Brazil comes second in the ranking of regions where there was the highest number of times Messenger Lite was downloaded.

Launched for Android in 2016, Messenger Lite was developed so that users with more basic cell phones might have a more fluid experience on Facebook’s instant messaging platform (Meta). Unfortunately, following 7 years of life, the application is being abandoned by Meta.

Messenger will drop support for SMS messages next month

In addition to the announcement regarding the end of Messenger Lite, Meta recently revealed that Messenger will drop support for SMS messages next month. According to the company, users they “will no longer be able to use Messenger to send and receive SMS messages sent over your cellular network when you update your app following September 28, 2023”.

End-to-end encryption enabled by default will arrive later this year

Another interesting news regarding Messenger is the arrival of support for end-to-end encryption enabled by default. According to Meta, the plan is to expand end-to-end encryption capabilities in the app by the end of 2023.
