The mayor of Brussels Philippe Close wants to send drug addicts to a new crisis center, at the CHU Brugmann, for a detoxification treatment.

The mayor of the City of Brussels Philippe Close wishes to open a crisis center for drug addictshe said during an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws.

The situation has been tense in Brussels-Midi for several weeks, due in particular to the circulation of drugs and the presence of drug addicts around the station.

Philippe Close has stressed on several occasions that as mayor of Brussels-City, he was not responsible for the Brussels-Midi station. However, he believes that cooperation between all levels of power is necessary to get things done.

The reinforcement of the police presence in the streets does not represent a sufficient measure, according to him. “The police can intervene for reasons of public order. They arrest people under the influence and put them in cells for six hours. Then they are released. Sometimes they are brought to justice, but it is rare” , explains the mayor.

“If it takes that long, I will fund the opening of such an infrastructure myself by next year.”

Psychiatric cure and follow-up

Philippe Close therefore wishes to approach the problem in another way, by redirecting drug addicts to a new crisis centerset up in collaboration with by CHU Brugmannwhere they might undergo drug treatment and consult psychiatrists.

The Brussels Region has also planned to install a second consumption room at lower risk by 2027. Philippe Close wants to speed things up. “If it takes that long, I will finance the opening of such an infrastructure myself by next year. The urgency is too great.”
