Shitstorm because of a summery ski slope – that’s what’s behind it

The ski slope for cross-country skiing in the middle of a heat wave doesn’t sit well with many people.

A cross-country race took place in Livigno this week.

There is a lot of criticism online for the winter sports event in the midst of a heat wave.

The snow used for the event is from last winter.

The Italian town of Livigno near the Swiss border is well known as a ski resort. But the ski equipment of many locals in the village with almost 7000 inhabitants is not only needed in the winter months: at the end of August the 1K Shot and Gara da li Contrada races take place in Livigno.

This year’s edition took place on August 24th. While professional athletes compete in cross-country skiing at the 1K Shot on a one-kilometre route, the Gara da li Contrada, which translates as “quarter race”, is more of a fun category. The locals compete on a route that is also one kilometer long, mostly in old-fashioned clothing and with outdated equipment.

Lots of outrage online

The community solemnly announced the start of the race on Instagram – and received a shit storm in the comments: “The madness. If you don’t respect the mountains, that’s the end. And that in one of the strongest heat waves in decades,” criticized a user of the community. “Snow in August is just a gimmick to please tourists – not to mention the energy that is required,” complains another. Others express their displeasure with a series of thumbs-down or clown emojis.

There is only isolated encouragement, the criticism clearly outweighs the criticism. Because even in the Italian town, the temperatures have been over 20 degrees in the last few days. However, the snow for the race was not produced artificially, but has been saved since winter using the so-called snow farming method, as the municipality of Livigno writes on its website.

This is how snow farming works

Larger areas of ice or snow are covered with white fleece. These reflect the sun’s rays and at the same time keep the temperature low. Even if the snow was not artificially produced, opinions on the internet differ as to whether a ski race is justifiable during a heat wave.
