A clogged culvert has been causing headaches for several years for a couple in Saint-Denis-de-Brompton, in the Eastern Townships.
For five years, the damage on the ground has shocked the residents and, for the past three years, many steps have been taken to try to solve the problem. However, each time, it is a failure for the couple.
“It’s become that when we call them, they no longer answer and don’t even call us back, it makes no sense,” exclaimed the citizen of the municipality, Guy Lassonde.
With the presence of water, the trees rot and the pile of mud prevents Mr. Lassonde and his wife from circulating in several sectors of their property. An old bridge that the couple used every day to reach part of the land is now covered in regarding two feet of water.
“Without exaggerating, we believe that three hectares have been destroyed and it will not improve (…) We must take the bull by the horns,” said Mr. Lassonde’s spouse, Danielle Blain.
The municipality of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton did not want to grant an interview to the TVA Sherbrooke team. The communications team has simply stated that a delay of three to four years is quite normal for this type of situation. As long as there is no fear for the safety of the residents, there is no emergency, according to them.
For its part, the Ministry of Transport of Quebec (MTQ) claimed to have become aware of the file of Mr. Lassonde and his wife, as the culvert is under a provincial road.
“The MTQ only acts as a guide in this kind of situation. We became aware of the problem and we assessed the problems of the culvert (…) The details such as the nature of the work and the dates planned for it, is the responsibility of the municipality of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton, ”a explained MTQ-Estrie spokesperson Isabelle Dorais.
In November 2022, the couple believed to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A letter from the municipality told them that their file was now a priority.
“The municipality of Saint-Denis-de-Brompton informed you last August that the work planned in your area would be postponed to 2023. We would like to reiterate that the said work will be a priority next spring (spring 2023)” is it indicated in the letter to the couple. As of August 24, 2023, there were still no changes to the property.
If the situation does not progress, the couple plans to resort to justice. “After three years, we really don’t ask for a lot and that’s enough,” added Mr. Lassonde.
