While the Lebanese were waiting, along with the people of Baalbek-Hermel, for the new “Corona” mutator, which began to spread in most countries, and its advances reached Lebanon, as confirmed by the Minister of Health, Dr. , recording a number of cases that are increasing day following day, causing fear of spreading infection, which is increasing in frequency, and prompting the medical staff to raise their voice in order to avoid a health disaster that may result in the event that the Ministry of Health does not deal with the file seriously, and to research the causes of the spread of the disease and work on prevention. In conjunction with the treatment of patients.
What is jaundice or “wheezing”?
Jaundice is a disease caused by the formation of an excessive amount of a substance called “bilirubin”, which acquires a yellowish color in the blood, as a result of a defect in the work of the liver, as it collects under the skin and in the whites of the eyes to turn it into a pale yellow color. Jaundice affects anyone of any age group, especially newborn children, and in cases of outbreaks resulting from pollution, it affects all age groups, even those who received the vaccine as a child or were exposed to the disease in previous periods. Viral hepatitis is highly contagious and affects the ability of the liver to perform its vital functions. It is transmitted to the body through contaminated food or water, or direct contact with the infected person. Those infected recover without the liver being damaged, as the recovery period extends for months if the patient does not receive the necessary treatment. . The most prominent symptoms are: fever, nausea, feeling tired, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin.
Since the beginning of August, which witnessed a rise in temperatures and water outages in neighborhoods within the city of Baalbek, and its pollution with sewage water, and following conducting the necessary laboratory tests that confirmed the pollution, in addition to irrigating some crops with bilge water in the Baalbek Plain, Majdaloun, and others, the “saphira” disease began. By appearing, as a number of cases are recorded daily, so that the number begins to rise gradually due to the infection transmitted by patients. And while cases of it were recorded every year and at such a time, the numbers increased this year, while people suffer from difficult economic conditions that prevent them from receiving the necessary treatment or entering hospitals, and being satisfied with home medicine without resorting to the procedures of the attending physician and the medicine prescribed by him. This causes the infection to pass on to other people, and prolongs the recovery period.
Regarding the reality of the situation in the city of Baalbek, the specialist in digestive diseases, Dr. Mustafa Solh, told “Nidaa Al-Watan” that since the beginning of August, the registration of cases has been increasing continuously, as more than three injuries are recorded daily, except for other doctors with specialization. . Regarding the main causes of disease, he indicates that the most important of them are: lack of hygiene, lack of water and its pollution, not washing fruits and vegetables before eating them, let alone irrigating them with sewage water, as the infection is transmitted mainly through touch. Regarding the age group, he explains that children between the ages of 8 and 12 are the most vulnerable, as well as the youth group. As for treatment, it is for those who can afford it because of the high costs in hospitals. Compared to previous years, Solh confirms that the numbers and percentages this year are high. In Arsal alone, and in one of the health centers, 7 cases of jaundice were recorded last Thursday out of 12 patients, most of whom were displaced Syrians.
And while a number of doctors confirm that the situation is still under control, and they are sending the registration of these cases to the Ministry of Health, the parents are sounding the alarm, fearing for their lives and the lives of their children, calling on the Ministry to take action to ensure that the infection does not spread, and to push for hospitals to receive cases at the Ministry’s expense and without pay any costs.
