According to PlanRadar report, 11% of total project costs are attributed to rework, underscoring the need for more effective project management strategies and processes to reduce rework. In the survey, which interviewed more than 2,500 companies, 52% highlighted that there were reductions in the need for rework following adopting technological platforms.
In addition, the lack of communication between the team is identified as the main cause of rework, followed closely by the lack of organization and proper management of documents and quality control errors. Of the 11 countries analyzed in the report, 8 believe that efficient, accurate and detailed planning would reduce most of the follow-up work. In Brazil, there is also a need for more qualified workers and the need to invest in their training.
By developing a realistic schedule, monitoring progress, and communicating effectively with all stakeholders, project managers can ensure that constructions are completed on time, on budget, and to the desired quality standards.
“We all agree that time is an essential factor in any business strategy. This is particularly evident in the construction industry, where rework is far from uncommon, causing delays at all stages of projects”, highlights Henrique Bragança, Country Manager at PlanRadar in Brazil.
In addition to direct economic and reputational damage, the study found that rectifications can lead to breach of contract claims and other legal issues, as well as the ethical consequences of wasted materials impacting the environment and social consequences.
