MANILA (Philippines)/JAKARTA (Indonesia)/OKINAWA (Japan) – Everything is now ready for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 which kicks off today in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan, with the confirmation of the final 32 squads participating in this 19th edition of the world tournament.
FIBA’s flagship tournament will be played for the 4th time in Asia following being held in the Philippines in 1978, Japan in 2006 and China in 2019. The 2023 edition will be the first to be hosted by several countries. The cities of Manila, Jakarta and Okinawa are ready to welcome the best teams in the world from August 25.
The final squads of 12 players from the 32 national teams have been confirmed:
Group A: Angola, Dominican Republic, Italy, Philippines
Group B: China, Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Sudan
Group C: Greece, Jordan, New Zealand, USA
Group D: Egypt, Lithuania, Mexico, Montenegro
Group E: Australia, Finland, Germany, Japan
Group F: Cape Verde, Georgia, Slovenia, Venezuela
Group G: Brazil, Ivory Coast, Iran, Spain
Group H: Canada, France, Latvia, Lebanon
Spain enters the competition with the ambition of becoming the 4th nation to successfully defend the world title acquired in the previous edition following Brazil in 1963, Yugoslavia in 2002 and the USA in 2014. In case of triumph , Spain would also become the 4th nation to win at least three world titles, the others being the USA and Yugoslavia with 5 titles each and the USSR with 3.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will be the second in a row with 32 participating teams. A total of 80 national selections took part in its qualifiers.
The opening match will oppose Angola to Italy on August 25 and the competition will conclude on September 10 in Manila.
In addition to allowing a team to lift the Naismith Trophy reserved for world champions, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will directly qualify seven countries for the Paris Olympic Tournament 2024, with hosts France already qualified.
The best teams from each continent – two for the Americas, two for Europe and one for Africa, Asia and Oceania – will indeed obtain their place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
