Our journalist accompanied Chantal Gevrey in the very first GAP of a CISSS in Montérégie, open since the beginning of the summer.

Ms. Gevrey, who had neck and shoulder pain, obtained the services of a physiotherapist following a consultation with a nurse clinician.

“I’m really impressed because I had a very nice reception, a good listening, good advice. And what’s more, I don’t pay because it’s the health insurance card,” explains the patient to Harold Gagné.

Émilie Privé, nurse clinician, points out that the problem experienced by Chantal Gevrey does not necessarily require a visit to the hospital.

“There are many people who sometimes call us for muscle or joint pain. Clearly, it does not always require a doctor”, she expresses.

As soon as she is consulted, the eldest can consult a physiotherapist, without going to a hospital in the region.

The latter lists the pains that might require a visit to the GAP.

“A lot of back, neck, knee problems, if not typical people who have their backs crossed, sprained ankles”, underlines Ariane Mainville, who left the private sector following 14 years to concentrate within the teams of the CISSS of Montérégie-Est.

The director of access to services at the CISSS de la Montérégie-Est notes that the GAP model is bearing fruit.

“30 to 40% of our customers called us with musculoskeletal disorders. So direct access to a physiotherapist has a positive impact for them. And if necessary, he is referred to a doctor […] We are convinced that if the patient sees the right professional at the right time, he will precisely avoid going to the emergency room and knocking on other doors in our front-line services, ”says Mélanie Malenfant.

University researchers are evaluating the benefits of this service, which might soon lead to the hiring of a second physiotherapist at the access desk.
