Preparing for the Start of the School Year: The Impact of Empty Schoolbags and Pencil Cases

In a few days, like thousands of children, Moïse will return to the first year of primary school. An important step for the son of Jacqueline Galant, whom he however has a little trouble understanding, and for good reason: the time is not quite ready for preparations. This year, it is indeed with an empty satchel and pencil case that the children of the first and second years of primary school will go back to school.

School supplies will all be covered by the schools, via a subsidy of 75 euros per pupil (and 59 euros in the nursery sections), granted by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. “I explain to him that we cannot put anything in the schoolbags or in the pencil box because everything will be given to him at school, but it is difficult for him to understand, especially since his pencil box will have to be left at school. school”, regrets the deputy-mayor.

”I must confess that I find this generalization unfortunate. Even more when it comes to a first schoolbag, it’s always nice for the child to be able to prepare it, fill it with selected supplies a few days before. I am well aware that for some parents, the reality is quite different. But in this case, this free access prevents children from choosing a folder or notebook in the colors of their favorite heroes, for example.

If we know that the start of the school year can indeed be distressing for some households and that the ministerial decision is intended to put children on an equal footing, the mayor of Jurbise believes that we are missing the boat. “Pencases will be left in class. What, then, of the children who will not have material to write or draw once at home? I think it would have been better if the lump sum had been allocated to the children, with a choice of breakdown for the parents. Some may have preferred to use it to buy gym stuff, new shoes,…”

In short, if the measure is intended to avoid discrimination, Jacqueline Galant believes that it also and above all deprives children and their parents of making choices and preparing for the start of the school year with enthusiasm.
