University of Applied Arts Vienna and Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines sign donation agreement for art projects

Artistic exchange and personal contacts in the context of art, culture, history and society in the Republic of the Philippines at the University of Applied Sciences in Vienna

Vienna (OTS) On behalf of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Rector Gerald Bast is very pleased regarding the partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Austria, which was sealed in a festive ceremony on Thursday, August 24, 2023. The ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines in Austria, Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas, is also enthusiastic regarding the newly started cooperation with the Vienna University of Applied Sciences.

“This initiative not only advances Europeans’ understanding of the arts and culture of the Philippines, but also inspires genuine interest in its diverse heritage and history, particularly our strong creative arts tradition. I am optimistic that this program will promote cross-cultural appreciation and exchange,” said Ambassador Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas. Angewandte Rector Gerald Bast adds the background to this new cooperation: “International relations are indispensable elements of lively universities. Interaction across countries enriches the thinking of the people involved from different realities of life and promotes the complexity of the content of artistic and scientific work.”

The donation agreement was made possible through a program initiated by Philippine Senator Loren B. Legarda. It supports academic programs and projects at universities worldwide that promote Filipino culture and heritage. The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines is donating an amount equivalent to almost EUR 50,000 (PHP three million Philippine Pesos) to the University of Applied Arts Vienna for artistic projects. This includes programs, projects and activities related to Filipino art, culture, history and society on the one hand and partnerships and collaborations with people or organizations presenting Filipino art, culture, history and society in Austria on the other hand and activities and projects beyond that dedicated to these stated goals.

In the applied will focus primarily on the department Artistic Strategies under the direction of Univ.Prof. Bouchra Khalili to deal with the tasks related to this donation. she is already heavily involved and engaged in initiating the first projects. Other departments of the Angewandte are cordially invited to participate in individual projects and to help shape them.

With this donation, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines would like to explicitly promote the ambitions of the University of Applied Arts Vienna and, at the same time, stimulate and support personal contacts and artistic exchange in relation to art, culture, history and society in the Philippines. “I am honored to be part of the project that celebrates and explores Filipino arts and culture and I would also like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the Angewandte for making this initiative possible in Vienna. I look forward to working on similar projects in the future and wish the Angewandte continued success,” concludes Kristine Camille Cruz, Cultural Officer and Attaché of the Philippine Embassy.
