South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will be joined by 6 more countries. The decisive announcement was made when the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa gathered to participate in the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

According to the BRICS decision, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will become members of the BRICS community from January 1, 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will fully support the development of the BRICS community. In the open plenary session, Prime Minister Modi announced his support for the development of the BRICS community. In his 10-minute long speech, Modi noted that BRICS has spearheaded many development initiatives over the past two decades. Modi opined that the BRICS countries should work together to develop technology for the future and study the possibilities in the railway sector.
Modi said in his speech that he was happy to be in a beautiful city like Johannesburg and that South Africa has a historical relationship with Mahatma Gandhi and India.
This time the summit is being held with the aim of BRICS expansion. 23 countries have applied for BRICS membership. This is the first time BRICS leaders are meeting together following Covid.
Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are also participating. Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the summit virtually as he has an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attends the summit.
