(CNN) A mountain guide has found the body of a man believed to have died more than 20 years ago on an Austrian glacier. 22, the police announced.
A guide found the body on the 18th at an altitude of regarding 2,900 meters on the Schläntenkäs glacier in East Tyrol. Police were called to retrieve the body by helicopter.
Police said the man was believed to have been involved in an accident on a glacier in 2001 while carrying ski touring equipment.
Cash, bank cards and a driver’s license were found in the man’s rucksack nearby. Police have tentatively identified the man as an Austrian man aged 37 at the time. He said DNA testing would confirm his identity. The test results are expected to be available in the next few weeks.
As climate change melts glaciers, objects and bodies once thought to be lost are being found, says Lindsey Nicholson, a glaciologist at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. Nicholson spoke to CNN last month following the body of a German mountaineer who disappeared 37 years ago was found in Switzerland.
“There is a long-term melting trend in glaciers,” Nicholson said, adding that this trend is expected to continue. He said the decrease in snowfall was contributing to the problem.
A recent study found that half of the world’s glaciers might disappear by the end of the century, even if ambitious climate change targets are met. The Schläntenkäs glacier where the bodies were found retreated 60 to 100 meters between 2019 and 2022, according to environmental group Greenpeace.
