Cutting-Edge Therapy for Children with Neurological Disorders: Boosting Rehabilitation with Habit-Ile

The Center Hospitalier Neurologique William Lennox, in Ottignies, has been testing for a few days a new therapy for children suffering from neurological disorders.

This therapy has already been proven in children with prenatal lesions. But for the first time in the world, it is clinically tested on patients suffering from permanent accidental brain damage (a child victim of a serious fall, for example).

Unlike traditional rehabilitation methods, the young patient undergoes intensive and continuous therapy for 15 days, at the rate of 6.5 hours a day, but using games he likes. Currently, seven children and adolescents (mostly hospitalized) are taking part in this program, the result of a collaboration between UCLouvain, the Lennox Center and the Haute Ecole Vinci. Each patient is guided by two interventionists (including student trainees in physiotherapy and occupational therapy) and by two professional supervisors.

Boost Therapy

A real intensive therapeutic course, this therapy called “Habit-Ile“acts as a sort of catalyst in the young patient’s revalidation journey.”By offering various fun activities for 15 days, the brain is stimulated to improve the movement of a limb, for example“, explains Cyrielle Gobert, neuropediatrician.
Thanks to this method, rehabilitation is more effective and faster“, comments Julie Paradis, researcher at the Haute Ecole Vinci and scientific collaborator at UCLouvain. “The children are motivated. They progress while having fun. We assess their progress within our disciplinary team“.
For two years, 40 children will test this Belgian therapy developed by Professor Yannick Bleyenheuft, from UCLouvain. The researchers are hoping for INAMI recognition, in order to implement this therapy in the classic care pathway for children.
