Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power announced that it would begin discharging contaminated water from nuclear power plants around 1:00 p.m.

The Tokyo Strategy said in a press release, “We will begin discharging contaminated water to the sea by operating seawater transfer pumps around 1:00 pm today.”

TEPCO said it had confirmed that the concentration of tritium in the water diluted with a large amount of seawater to be discharged for the first time was below the standard, and that there were no problems with weather and ocean conditions.

Previously, TEPCO sent regarding 1 ton of contaminated water to the dilution facility the day before the Japanese government confirmed the start date of discharge of contaminated water, mixed it with 1,100 tons of seawater and put it in a large tank.

Next, we checked that the concentration of tritium in the samples taken from the tank was below the discharge standard of 1,500 becquerels per liter.

TEPCO explained that the concentration of tritium was lower than the standard value in a sample of water obtained by the Japan Atomic Energy Development Research Organization.

TEPCO plans to discharge regarding 460 tons of contaminated water a day by diluting it with seawater for 17 days, and initially discharge 7,800 tons of contaminated water into the sea.

Afterwards, TEPCO plans to disclose various data related to marine discharge of contaminated water in real time.
