Electricity: bill errors for 100,000 ENI customers

2023-08-23 21:49:21

After several days of controversy for adjustment bills of astronomical amounts, the electricity supplier ENI has admitted errors. According to the office of Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister for Energy Transition, “ENI’s managers have acknowledged sending erroneous invoice schedules to some of their customers who renewed their contracts in the second half of 2022, in particular because they did not fully incorporate government protective measures. Requested several times this Wednesday evening, the company might not be reached.

This mea culpa follows a meeting organized this Wednesday at the end of the followingnoon at the Hotel Roquelaure (Paris VIIe). Summoned by the Minister, the French managers of the Italian company were invited to explain these numerous complaints. Several media, including Le Parisien, had relayed testimonies. Thus, this couple, David and Jennifer, installed in Ain and parents of four children, had received a bill of nearly 4,597 euros. Alexandre, owner of two apartments in Le Mans (Sarthe) had been claimed by ENI for nearly 9,000 euros. A Facebook group “Victims of ENI and their shenanigans” with more than 3,000 members was even created.

Sanctions will be pronounced “if necessary”

Still according to the cabinet of Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the leaders of ENI “are committed to implementing corrective measures guaranteeing that their customers are indeed billed the price of the energy shield for the year 2023. Around 100,000 customers should be affected by this rectification. »

Another company, Engie, also singled out by disgruntled customers, was summoned this Wednesday to the Ministry of Ecological Transition. Although the energy mediator (CRE), present at the meeting, did note an increase in disputes affecting the French supplier, “he has not identified any lack of compliance with the regulations at this stage”, specifies the cabinet of the minister who however asked Engie “to deal on a case-by-case basis with customers receiving significant regularizations in order to find the best solutions”. Asked a few days ago by Le Parisien, Engie had notably indicated that it was setting up a payment spread to help customers pay their bill.

This wave of bills with large amounts comes as the government has implemented since 2022 a tariff shield on the price of electricity to protect households and very small businesses once morest rising prices.

To avoid any slippage, the Ministry of Energy Transition has asked the CRE but also the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) “to monitor any suspicion of abuse by suppliers vis-à-vis vis-à-vis their customers, to initiate investigations and impose sanctions if necessary”.
