In addition to eating well, being physically active, and complying with their medical checkups, our older adults need family unity, patience, support, and lots of love. Only then can they prevent chronic pictures of sadness, loneliness and fear of death.

The psychologist Ítalo Arrúe comments that the elderly often present crises of depression and anxiety because they do not know how to deal with these last years. “The worst thing that the family of an older adult can do is leave them alone or believe that they do not need quality time. Now is when he requires more patience and shows of love because he feels that death is approaching, ”he explains.

Arrúe offers four tips to take care of your ‘old man’s mental health and prevent him from getting depressed:

Make him feel important. Do not make decisions for him or her, unless they have a medical diagnosis that prevents them from doing so. Ask him how he is, what he feels and what he needs. Let him express his opinion and express himself freely. It needs to be heard. Don’t downplay their comments. Promote more family gatherings. Give him quality time, full of tenderness and love. Encourage family games, recreational activities, etc. Motivate him to hang out with his friends or meet new people. These social ties are key in older adults.
