Some 6,000 school bus driver jobs are still vacant less than two weeks before the start of the school year, according to the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune. “We are approaching this new school year 2023 (…) in a much better situation and with little worry regarding the transport, which will be provided for the two million students”he however affirmed Wednesday August 23 in front of the press.
Last year, 8,000 bus driver positions were still not filled as the start of the school year approached. To reduce the number of vacancies at the start of the new school year, the Ministries of Transport and Labour, in collaboration with the regions, have simplified a certain number of procedures in order to allow faster job openings. “We had already started lowering the age of the school bus driver’s license from 21 to 18”recalled the Minister of Transport.
His colleague from work, Olivier Dussopt, also argued for an average increase of 8% in the wages of drivers combined “with the desire to offer more stable contracts”.
Satisfaction of the FNTV
The ministers made sure with the regions that solutions had been found to make up for the vacancy of these 6,000 posts so that there is no “no suspension of school transport”, said Clément Beaune. Thus, in the Great East, “a staggered return and departure times” has been put in place, said Prisca Thevenot, Secretary of State for Youth.
The National Federation of Passenger Transport (FNTV) welcomed the government’s mobilization for the start of the school year. ” The school transport plan has improved the situation, which remains tense in companies. Strong expectations from the profession persist to reduce the time it takes to issue permits », she writes on X (formerly Twitter).
