Major Fire at Renewi Waste Recycling Center in Wandre: Updates, Safety Precautions, and Ongoing Firefighter Efforts

Firefighters and civil protection are still present in Wandre, on the Renewi site, the waste recycling center where a major fire broke out overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, around 11 p.m. During the night, residents and the inhabitants of the neighboring communes of Basse-Meuse were asked to close the windows of their homes and to remain confined. The men of the fire will still remain on the spot during all this day and perhaps part of the night.

If unpleasant odors can persist, the analysis of the fumes has however proved to be reassuring, as explained by Laurent Charbon, captain of the Liège fire brigade. ” We carried out surveys with specific detection equipment at the level of Visé and Hermalle-sous-Argenteau as well as in the direct surroundings of the company. All these measurements that were carried out did not reveal anything abnormal. This is still smoke which, in general, is not good for your health, but it is no more harmful than the smoke from a barbecue.“.

It is a battery crushed among the waste that recycles the company Renewi which would be at the origin of the fire. This would have caused a short circuit.

The fire is currently under control but firefighters will still remain on site all day and perhaps part of the night to ensure its extinction.
