Upgrading for the entire region
St. Polten (OTS) – The Thaya stretches along the Austrian-Czech border, from the Waldviertel to the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The 235 km long river has its source in the municipality of Schweigger and is considered an important identification point for the local population. In the leader region Waldviertler Grenzland, a careful natural redesign of the square should offer an authentic experience of nature in the future.
The source of the Thaya is under a birch and is marked with a source stone. Locals in particular appreciate the natural space in the municipality of Schweiggers. As a tourist attraction, however, it is still relatively unknown. This is now to be changed in the course of a Leader project. “The origin of the Thaya is not only important for locals, but also for guests. A redesign and a professional staging of the natural area is intended to create more awareness of the region as a tourist destination,” emphasizes Mayor Margit Göll, Chairwoman of the Leader Region Waldviertler Grenzland.
The tourism staging is the focus of the promotion of the Thaya origin spring. For this purpose, the main focus is on the development of a graphic appearance and the development of a tourism concept. In addition, the actual place of origin is to be redesigned in order to offer the population and guests a true experience of nature. “It is our aim with this initiative to boost tourism and to create more appreciation for the element water in general,” emphasizes Josef Schaden, mayor of the market town of Schweiggers. The Leader region Waldviertler Grenzland selected the project for funding in accordance with its local development strategy. It is funded with support from the state and the European Union. The state of Lower Austria recently decided to support the EU program Leader and the ecoplus regional funding on the initiative of the governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner.
