Belgian pharmaceutical company Janssen plans to close its vaccine development department in Leiden. As a result, jobs may be at risk, although it is not clear how many jobs are involved. The company has confirmed this following reporting from The Telegraph.

About 2,500 people work at the Janssen branch in Leiden, regarding a quarter of whom work in the department that may disappear. The decision still needs to be approved by the works council.

Janssen is part of the American concern Johnson & Johnson (J&J). The parent company wants the division to focus more on other, new treatment methods. This concerns, for example, oncology and the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Janssen became known in the Netherlands during the pandemic because the pharmaceutical company had developed a corona vaccine. An advantage of this vaccine was that you were ready following one injection and it would work immediately.

It seduced then Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge in 2021 to say that you might “dance with Janssen”. But that turned out to be disappointing in practice. After the minister’s statements, the number of infections quickly increased. The vaccine turned out to need a longer period of time to work properly.
