Italians swear by their espresso – rightly so, if you believe the results of a recent study. Accordingly, the ingredients of the caffeine drink might be a key once morest dementia.

A simple espresso contains, according to the German Coffee Association an average of 70 milligrams of caffeine. For comparison: A simple filter coffee with a cup size of 200 milliliters, i.e. more than five times the amount of an espresso, has 95 milligrams of caffeine, which has a stimulating effect.

Breakthrough?

So, the small cup of Italian coffee culture is a real caffeine bomb – and might have even more benefits, as a research team from the University of Verona has discovered. According to this, certain extracts in espresso can prevent the clumping of certain proteins in the brain that are believed to be involved in the development of Alzheimer’s. The researchers published their results in the journalJournal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry“.

Does that mean you should ideally drink an espresso every day? Before we take a closer look at this for you, we have a question for you:

Alzheimer’s: caffeine and components of coffee prevent, show laboratory experiments

In particular, the substances caffeine, trigonelline, genistein and theobromine showed a clear effect and prevented so-called tau fibrils, which are deposited in the brain and have been increasingly detected in Alzheimer’s patients. What’s more, the substances that are more concentrated in an espresso than in filter coffee, for example, also ensured that existing tau fibrils formed groups less frequently and clumped together and became shorter. The effect increased the higher the concentration of the espresso extracts.

In order to arrive at this finding, the individual substance molecules were incubated together with tau fibrils for 40 days. The researchers made the effect visible using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

It was also shown that the tau fibrils shortened by the espresso extracts no longer had a toxic effect on cells and might not form protein clumps in the cell tissue. The researchers also observed that caffeine and the espresso extract might bind to pre-existing tau fibrils. The authors of the study write that this indicates that the substances might also be used to treat the first signs of Alzheimer’s.

Espresso as an Alzheimer’s drug?

Of course, the isolated laboratory effect doesn’t take place one-to-one in your brain as soon as you drink a cup of espresso. Your metabolism ensures that the pure espresso extracts do not go directly to where they might work once morest the problematic Alzheimer’s proteins. However, caffeine can cross the blood-brain barrier and might have a direct effect.

The research team now wants to use the new findings to research preventive or therapeutic treatments for Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases in which cognitive abilities are impaired. It is not yet clear how Alzheimer’s develops and why the proteins are deposited in the brain.

Currently, Alzheimer’s cannot be cured or completely prevented. However, there are medications that can slow down the disease. Lifestyle changes can also delay symptoms. However, a daily cup of espresso can’t hurt, the researchers write: “We have presented ample evidence that espresso, a commonly consumed beverage, is a source of natural compounds that have beneficial properties in ameliorating dew-related pathologies.”

In addition, coffee is said to have a number of other positive effects. About reducing the risk of liver diseases as well as that for cancer, according to researchers in a Study from the year 2022 have found out. As with everything, the same applies to espresso: you should not drink too much of it.

So that your coffee enjoyment is not only healthy, but also particularly tasty, here are a few tips for you:
